IIIT Completes Second Round of Admissions 2020

As the pandemic continues to grip our everyday lives, the second online rendition of the Induction programme for the 2020 batch of freshman commenced on the 16th of November. Kicking off with a welcome address by the Director and the Deans, the event lasted five days, concluding with a Parents Meet on the 21st of November. Classes for the new batch began a couple of days later on the 23rd. This batch consisting of admits from JEE as well as Round 3 of UGEE is unique in the fact that, for the first time in the institute’s history, IIIT introduced a Diversity Pool targeting a 25% intake of women students through the JEE mode of admission. With a cutoff of 2217 for CSE and 4735 for ECE for the Diversity Pool, the second batch of freshers consisted of 49  girls and 148 boys. In total, there are 62 girls in the UG2k20 batch, a record high for IIITH.

Being held entirely on online platforms like Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, Induction featured a brief introduction to the clubs of IIITH. Clubs including the Debate Society, Pentaprism-the Photography Club, the Programming Club, Lit Club, Art Society as well as the Entrepreneurship Cell had full-fledged events to encourage fresher participation. A shorter version of the Linux Fest, held by the Open-Source Developer Group and the Student Apex Body aided Freshers in getting accustomed to the fundamentals of Linux and taught them the basics of Dual-Booting and some essential commands and tips for Ubuntu. A full-fledged event similar to that held during the first Induction was later organized on the 8th of December. Decore, a club focussed on the idea of design and creativity which was established between the two Inductions of the UG2k20 batch, also held their first Fresher event.

Besides club events, the Apex body also held regular cluster meets for freshers to get to know each other as interaction was one of the factors severely affected due to the online format of the semester. Furthermore, they acted as a platform for them to voice their queries regarding subjects ranging from academic stress to food joints around the campus.
