IEEE Student Chapter Formed (Again)
Introduction
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is an international association dedicated to advancing technological innovation, largely through conferences and publications. IIITH had an IEEE chapter that was active till 2018. You can still check out their Facebook page
Now, after 3 years, the group is restarting due to newfound student interest and faculty support. IIIT’s IEEE chapter is now headed by Annesha Mazumder, under the counselling of Prof. Anil Kumar.
IEEE Structure
Established in 1976, IEEE India Council is the umbrella organisation that coordinates IEEE activities in India. Its primary aim is to assist and coordinate the activities of local “sections” to benefit mutually and avoid duplication of effort and resources.
IEEE’s local chapters are organised within universities by students with some faculty oversight. The general vision of such chapters is to motivate, educate and broaden the scope of knowledge for the students, and get them to work on innovative ideas in a creative manner. To do this, the organisation holds talks (by guests, alumni or even other students), workshops and gives out projects for students to work on.
The programmes are not all entirely technical. NITK IEEE, for example, partners with “Women in Engineering” to coordinate events and mentorship programs to promote female inclusivity in engineering.
IEEE Today
As per IIIT Hyderabad’s IEEE Student Chapter President, IEEE member students have the chance to network with other passionate students and professionals, allowing them to participate in the exchange of ideas and collaborative research. Apart from this, the group plans to start a regular newsletter reporting on the latest research and interesting IEEE events. IEEE student chapters regularly hold events, and with the current pandemic, conducting these events is hard, but the group intends to conduct regular online talks and workshops. On April 27th, the group had its first event – a talk by Dr Animesh Kumar, a signal processing expert from IIT Bombay. Student members are eligible for discounts for attending conferences & workshops hosted by IEEE. They can also apply for grants, scholarships and programs specifically designed for students and receive free access to many IEEE resources.
Similar to other IEEE Chapters, IEEE@IIITH will recruit new members through interviews conducted once a year.
