The Three New Clubs of the Summer

If you are interested in learning foreign languages, playing out in the super fantasy league with your friend during this IPL season, or just looking forward to some exciting events this online semester, worry no further because our three amazing clubs have got all your needs covered. With unique histories, inspirations, and fun activities and events planned ahead, read on to find out more about our three new and emerging clubs and all the fun events they have planned for the online semester ahead!

We spoke to the founders of these clubs to establish the clubs’ goals and plans for the year. 

Foreign Language Club

“A club for languages, not the programming ones…” 

“The problem with learning a new language, though is that you don’t have many people to practice speaking with.” 

The foreign language club was started just this July – a month when everyone was missing college and interacting with others. A month at home also meant that people were bored and excited to learn new things be it dancing, playing instruments, or just extending their sleeping records. 

One such endeavour was exploring new languages, and apps like Duolingo were used extensively. However, a critical component of learning which was missing in such apps was the opportunity to speak and interact with others in the language. As a solution, the founders who too were learning new languages came up with a platform for people to interact and learn new languages together.  

“Our aim is not to “teach” anyone as such since most of us are still beginners. But we believe that with more people, we could learn together.” 

The club has a wonderful and welcoming community where you could start on your journey to conquer a new language. There are already people speaking in a language such as Japanese, French, Spanish, Arabic. The club is not aimed at teaching new languages; instead, the club is more about learning new languages together in a more fun and interactive way! 

“We thought that if (at all) we want people to interact, wouldn’t it be great and unique if they were talking to each other in a different language other than English, Hindi or regional languages?” 

The club had conducted an online event, “post a phrase” during August. In this event, people could post some phrase, word or idiom in a foreign language along with its meaning and usage. The club has a discord server too, where people can interact in different languages. The club also compiles the top scorers of Duolingo users from IIIT weekly Duolingo contest. 

Plans for on-campus activities are also going on, such as foreign movie screenings, treasure hunts and sit, and chat sessions in a completely different language. The ideas are endless. In all, the club has a beautiful and engaging group of people who would love to learn and interact with you!

Amateur Sports Enthusiasts Club

Founders: Tejasvi Chebrolu, Eshan Gupta, Mayank Goel 

“We want to make it (sports) a fun activity that people would like to contribute to, and so far, the response has been really good.” 

This club was formed just this semester and aims to revolutionise our sporting culture. Many prior efforts to conduct events to bring the college together as one through sports were successful. This inspired the club to create a system to group all the individual efforts. They seek to connect people through fun and exciting sports events! 

“We want people to make Sunday evening sports as popular as Sunday afternoon biriyani !!!” 

The club seeks to promote active participation in sports and related activities regardless of your prowess in the sport you enjoy playing. The club also aims to increase female participation in sports by forming strong female teams for the inter-college tournaments. 

Most importantly, the club wants to change people’s attitude towards sports in college by making sports a fun activity that people would like to contribute to and enjoy! 

The club aims at providing the necessary platform in bringing people together to discuss sports, get excited about the next sports event, and just to have fun together.  

“We also want to see girls taking part in activities and forming stronger female teams for inter-college tournaments.” 

The online nature of this semester hasn’t at all dampened the spirits of this club, and many exciting events have been planned ahead! 

The club plans on bringing you exciting events like watch parties, fantasy leagues and in-person leagues in all varieties of sports! Along with that, the club has screenings for football matches along with IPL screenings that are happening presently. ASEC has also helped host the first-ever IIIT-H Superfan Fantasy League! 

The club has exciting plans for another two events this online semester whose details we will not yet disclose. They even have planned on having League format tournaments for the next semester in hopes of an on-campus semester. The ASEC is all set to make your online semester a fun one!

Developer Student Clubs

Founder: Jai Bardhan 

“The idea was to start a chapter of DSC in IIIT-H.” 

Motivated by the learning opportunities and valuable experience the DSC students had access to, this club was formed to start a similar chapter of DSC in IIIT-H. The DSC connects our college to a fantastic global community, comprising many colleges such as IITs, NITs and even colleges from other parts of the world, through various events and activities. 

“Another thing that resonated with me was the outlook for social development.” 

The DSC strives for social development- a primary motivator for the formation of the club. The DSC motivates and inspires to develop for a change. The club plans to implement this goal through various sessions and hackathons.  

The club aims at motivating students to develop for change. The clubs want to inspire students to utilise current and new technology to solve real-life problems for the betterment of society. The other goal that the club works for is to provide a platform where people can not only learn but also teach others. 

“This month, the crash course is on Google Cloud Platform dubbed ’30 Days of Cloud.'” 

The DSC club, in collaboration with DSC Global, plans on organising crash courses every month. The crash course for this month dubbed “30 Days of Cloud” is on Google Cloud Platform. The club also plans to hold sessions/programs on Android, Web and machine learning and many more new frameworks and technologies in the upcoming months. 

 The club aims to not only teach you the basics but also show the perspective of current applications and discuss technology development to solve real-life problems. Since now, IIIT-H is a chapter of DSC; our college will get to participate in the Solution Challenge, which is a global challenge held every year during February. The club also has plans (though not yet confirmed) for organising a hackathon during the upcoming winter vacations.
